Could somebody tell me whether [livejournal.com profile] mimbo is Chris Williams or David Williams? I'm not sure.

Because apparently [livejournal.com profile] mimbo responded to a short poll here which asked how Chris Williams' answers to Henry Jenkins affected our opinions of FanLib. (Let's just say he's an outlier in the results.)

Also, is this a breach of netiquette if he is Chris? The questions not being exactly aimed at him and all . . . did he realize that anybody could see who answered what?

In the notorious wanky emo crossposted noncapitalized reply, [livejournal.com profile] mimbo said that he was Chris.

[identity profile] stewardess.livejournal.com 2007-05-27 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
He is Chris. He uses the same name, mimbo, at FanLib's site.

Given that he was dumb enough to spam us in the first place and he's never actually USED his lj to do anything more than spam us?

I'd say he doesn't realize people will see. Either that, or he doesn't care.

The man is an idiot. He thinks we are too.

I think that might be physically impossible at this point. Sheesh.

I don't think it's a breach of nettiquette really. The poll was linked on [livejournal.com profile] metafandom and it's public so really anyone could vote. It does show that in spite of his lack of time to actually talk to fans, he is either using LJ Seek or following [livejournal.com profile] metafandom links and paying pretty close attention to the discussion.

Yeah, I don't think it's bad manners in and of itself, just in the sense that "Oh, I don't hear any of you unless you speak through Prof. Jenkins lalala. I'm just in ur lj, fillin out ur p0llz."

*nods*

The night I posted the poll, I had missed the [livejournal.com profile] metafandom post. I commented on that evening post to let them know about the HJ entry and the poll. Mimbo was in the first 40 or 50 responses before metafandom linked the poll. I've got robot blocking up in my journal, so he either read my comment to Metafandom or perhaps he saw a link in another journal.

[identity profile] alex-quine.livejournal.com 2007-05-27 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to be charitable and say that he ought to be able to vote for himself, so to speak.

[identity profile] impysh.livejournal.com 2007-05-27 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
Bless! Of course he's been waiting for a site just like FanLib so that he can post his fanfic and get reviews and get closer to the talent....No, hold on. He was waiting for the ad revenue.

[identity profile] freifraufischer.livejournal.com 2007-05-27 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
This is... wow. I'm weirdly starting to feel sorry for him. Not enough to use his site or think it's not a bad idea. Someone should get the boy some booze and tell him to take the day off.

I don't think it's against netiquette, really. That poll is public and open to all, after all. As long as he doesn't show up with a sockpuppet army to tweak the result but just speaks for himself, it's all good, imho.

Though it'd be interesting to know whether he knew that people can see who voted how.

I agree - public post, public poll, and even politicians get to cast their vote in their own election. Not against netiquette.

[identity profile] ithiliana.livejournal.com 2007-05-27 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Snickered like crazy when I saw that--I agree, not against netiquette but boy does it win him *LOSER* points!

But then I'd say the samed thing for jdsampson posting all her fics at the site that employs her (and being, as some asute person pointed out) "featured writer" w/extra cookie (can we say BNF) at the site!

It's not against netiquette - he has as much a right to respond as anyone else. Also, he thinks FanLib could be improved by tickyboxes. Didn't you want to know that?! :D

[identity profile] gmth.livejournal.com 2007-05-27 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's against netiquette, either. But it is very, very sad.

Ha-haha! Thank you for pointing that out.

It's a public poll. It's not a breach of netiquette, IMO, just rather dumb and pointless.

Which... well. Are we surprised?

[identity profile] severalemilys.livejournal.com 2007-05-27 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
He's deleted the post. Anyone save it (actually, do I even want to read it? Hmmm).

But he's a member of the community now!! He has a livejournal and everything!

I have just found out that David Williams is [livejournal.com profile] gideonblaze. And if you thought that Chris' LJ was empty, David's echoes.

And if LJ doesn't have "A Clue" as a virtual gift, then they're missing a bet. :-)

Oh, good! I'm still wading through the gigabytes of wank that has erupted over this. Not so much because I want to know more about what's going on, but because so much of it is blinkin' hilarious! I'm still chortling over their perception that there *IS* a statistically significant male demographic to capture. I'm also wondering where I can get me some o'that venture capital money. Seems they'll give it to anyone with a half-baked business plan. I can do that. Shoot, I write fiction. I should be able to spend someone else's money at *least* as effectively as Mr. Williams.

On the other hand, I'm beginning to think maybe we should all start writing fanlib!fic in our various fandoms. :-) Oh, how I wish Anias was still out there. Never have her sharp parody skills been needed more. ;-)

I shall have to ponder the nature of what a fanlib!fic should entail and then post the suggestion in my various Stargate venues. One should never turn one's back on potential crack!fic tropes (they tend to bite).
