Back when this began to hit the fan, debra_tabor put up an amusing poll about the issue.

If you've seen anything funny that I've missed, please link it in the comments. One of fandom's traditional ways of coping with idiots is to laugh at them and it's good to see we're managing it now. :)

Damn, I wanted to be the first to write Pink Guy/Blue Guy slash... now I will have to consider whether it is worth breaking my brain and betraying my icon.

And also: To not go near FanLib at all, or to make an account only to troll horribly, that is the question... (It surprises me how internet etiquette breaks down here. I have considered things like mass e-mailings of the authors on the site and troll attacks that I, as a Good Member of Fandom, wouldn't even dream of doing normally - just because I think the possible danger of this website overrides netiquette. I am willing to do a helluva lot to make it gone.)

My take is that it's enough of a pile of rubbish that it'll disappear on its own, without any help from us. Quite frankly, I'd say the best we can do is to quit publicising it (after all, the way that mob of bozos are, they probably *do* agree that any publicity is good publicity) and leave 'em to implode on their own.

Certainly I'm going to be keeping an ear out for anyone on my f-list who talks about receiving an invite, and warning them about the killer TOS as well as the "mine eyes, they bleed" design, as well as pointing out the obvious failings. But why bother trolling the authors who are already there? I know this sounds really callous, but I think the best thing that could possibly happen is for one of them to get the famous C&D, and wind up with FanLib suing her for costs. That *would* get them into the headlines... and it would destroy their credibility completely.

You have a point; I just can't shake the (probably unreasonable) fear that this is what will prompt either the Decisive Court Case or just generally a number of big license-holders deciding that with such a massive effort to profit off fanfic, tolerating it is clearly no good. I hope it's just me being paranoid, but I see a lot of other people afraid that this could come crashing down on all our heads. Which is why I want it gone, preferably before TPTB get enraged.

I also feel really sorry for the authors who don't realise what they're getting into. I know I first went "yowza, corporate support of fanfic? Did I wake up in Bizarroland today?" before I read the posts with more detailed analyses of the whole "corporate support" deal. Someone who's not on LJ might not hear about this mess and might join - and, well, no one deserves that.

Oh, and - although I have heard the "all publicity is good publicity" before, I'm not sure how on earth they want to gain an advantage out of the attention they're getting here! I mean, everyone's basically just screaming "RUN AWAY FROM FANLIB AS FAST AS YOU CAN oh and tell all your friends too!!"

I advise against trolling because it's a lot of effort for a small return. It's better to use our time muckraking.

*nods* And it'd probably make our community look bad... although to be fair, no one really cares about us. That's why I'm worrying - sure, the people who know fandom are realising that we are trying to divorce ourselves from this as much as possible - but what about the big license-holders, if they decide to come down /hard/ on fanfic? What about the people we're actually in danger from? It just annoys me because it's possible this will hit us and there's nothing we can do about it.

I admit one of the main reasons I turned away from trolling is because I don't want them to get any more traffic at all. >>

I know what you mean. I have a similar dilemma. I'm very thankful that three of my fandoms seem to have no involvement, but all those LotR posts worry me. I want to get my people out of there.

That's exactly it. I mean, so many of them are Suethors and fanbrats but they're our Suethors and fanbrats and although we may want to give them a smack up the head sometimes they don't deserve to get exploited and hung out to dry like this.

And also, of course, the less people are involved in this the more likely it'll fizzle.
