OT geography rant

I didn't know what 4400 was, so I looked it up in Wikipedia. This debate might be old meme if you're in the fandom.

In the pilot episode, what is originally thought to be a comet deposits a group of exactly 4400 people at Highland Beach, in the Cascade Range foothills near Mount Rainier, Washington.

I know that Mount Rainier is generally considered to be a part of the Cascade Range, but it's like two hours away. That does not describe where it is, besides narrowing it down to half a state (a state which is roughly the size of France).

It's a Vancouver production set in Seattle. I included it as a "not white hot" fic fandom but a growing fandom as a whole, currently airing show that's about to start it's 4th season.

And it involves people with super powers which has great potential for smut. Much like Heroes.

Actually a show I rather like, but should be picked up from the beginning, watching random third season episodes is a recipe for comfusion.

This article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highland_Beach_(The_4400)) says it's set outside Olympia (which is about an hour from Seattle) which actually is near Mount Rainier, so that's encouraging. I was also relieved that Highland Beach refers to a lake shore, as Olympia/Mount Rainier are about two hours east of the nearest ocean shore.

Given the few times they go back to HIghland Beach in the series, they do seem to imply that it is a drive from Seattle, and yes, it's a lake shore. I don't think they've been outragious about the geolography. It's not like Stargate shooting Vancouver for Colorado when they have... very different landscapes.

I should watch it. I loved X-Files when it was shot in Vancouver, then hated it as soon as they moved to Hollywood. The desert just isn't as scary as the woods, unless there are like giant worms under the sand or something.

It starts out a bit lighter in tone than X-Files, and gets darker as it goes on. I've described it recently as "the X-Files meets the X-Men" but it's not a horror series.

You can probably rent or netflix the first season easily and that should give you a sense as to if you'd like the show. It was a short 6 episode season with a lot of the flavor and pacing of a miniseries. As much as I hate telling people to start any show at the beginning, I wouldn't encourage picking it up in season four when that starts airing on USA. It started out as a mix of stand alone and arc episodes but it has become very arc driven.

I'm so weird. I like arc-y shows, but then my favorite episodes are always the standalone ones. My favorite Buffy was "Hush" (zombies that float, eat hearts and steal your voice). My favorite X-Files were nightgown-hearts guy, stilts guy that Photoshops with his mind, and "Home" (inbred family).

Than I think you'd probably like it. Basically it starts with the main characters going "wtf?" about all these people returned and the powers start to manifest slowly and the first season is about finding out why their there and than the second season it starts to get more of the consquences/conspiracies, with a mix of "nifty power of the week" episodes. Season three has ... I think one stand alone and even that's kind of dependent on knowing the arc.

A friend of mine tried to watch a random third season episode because it was rec'd to her and she managed to pick up one of the most arc dependent episodes I could imagin. I told her it would have been like picking up Battlestar Galactica at Rapture or X-Files at Two Fathers.

Not to mention I wouldn't call the area around it "foothills." Yakima? Rainier valley?

Yeah, it's kind of a standalone mountain, as mountains go around here. When someone says "Cascade foothills," I'm thinking Cle Elum.
