Yep, that makes it glaringly obvious.

Hell, I bet Walking the Plank, a Snape/Harry specific archive, gets more action than Fanlib.

I thought it said something very lovely that Law & Order SVU got more fics on FFN than Harry "I have too many fangirls in a pre-apocalyptic frenzy" Potter. Now I read SVU fic, but I hardly think of it has a red hot blazing fan fic fandom.

Much as it pains me, I think I need to bring up a point.

One thing that concerns me about this is that it's a bit misleading. If we think about ff.net, and how huge and well-known it is, it's not surprising that over 1300 fics have been posted (net) when FanLib got only 6.

I think it'd be fairer to look at percentage growth, but I doubt it would be nearly as encouraging. And even that might be wrongly inflated in the other direction, because FL has such few numbers to start with. Even a single fic being posted is a large net gain compared to even 100 fics being posted on ff.net.

I don't view it as a direct comparison for all the reasons you describe, except on a Schadenfreude level. I post the FFN numbers to illustrate what can be expected to be popular fandoms. As was pointed out sometime earlier in one of these stat posts, Fanlib should be gaining a much faster rate because at this point they should be getting authors coming in with previous stockpiles of old fic. The numbers on the aggregate suggest they don't have any statistically significant numbers of new authors uploading fic.

That's a very good point that I hadn't considered. I was thinking in terms of people showing up and posting their new fics one by one, like they do in ff.net.

But you're right, people should be importing all of their old ones, too. Clearly, they're not. At least, not in the great numbers one might expect.

I think they aren't loosing their existing authors (at least not in the sense that they are pulling their fic off the archieve), but I think the data is a large enough set now to suggest that they probably aren't gaining authors.

I don't have the number handy but some days back I went through their entire list of fandoms and came up with a total number of stories somewhere in the 5500 range. That's not enough of an archieve to sustain a profit driven buisness model I'd suspect.

Yeah. To give a number sample, if I joined FanLib tomorrow just by my uploading the following fandoms would jump:

Harry Potter - 130
Stargate Atlantis - 32
Stargate SG-1 - 21
Lord of the Rings - 3
Supernatural - er, 1

I'm by no means the most prolific author in any of those fandoms, not even HP.

And on a metalevel I should probably say that I'm not a fan of FFN, and about six months ago pulled my fic out of the archieve because of ... the worlds oddest abusive reader reviews.

Even if you do the math like that, Fanlib grew by .052% and Fanfic.net grew by .2% (according to the above sample) which looks like a much smaller gap than 6 and 1356 however you have to consider a) how long fanfic.net has had to acquire that initial number of fics and what freifraufischer said about fanlib recruiting authors with dozens of fics already to their name.

I'm sure other analysis can be done but I think the numbers as they are give us a fairly decent idea of how fanlib is doing.

I mean, there are lj comms that get more fanfic posts.

Yeah, if that was a daily total for fanlib it would be one of their higher ones though, sadly.

As for your earlier question about the SPN fics... I'll admit that I included that fandom for among other reasons, the fact that I suspected that because of the nature of the fandom they were the most likely to have stories yanked by Fanlibs "moderate to the max" folks.

Besides Bible fandom.
